OK-Tho:
How hard has it been for you to make a name for yourself as an up coming female MC, especially coming from Queens?
Dynasty:
You know.. it was a little challenging when I was still home, in Queens, because it was so over saturated in NYC. Eveybody wants in on this music. But I moved to FL and I really stood out there so it was a little easier to establish a name for myself. In fact.. I was in FL, when I connected with Premier and Talib.
OK-Tho:
Was it tough getting love and support when you would open up for Wu Tang, Mos Def, Kweli and them?
Dynasty:
Actually, it wasn't. I can't front though..I got a little nervous at the Wu-Tang show.. the dude before me got booed in Wu-Tang fashion. The crowd threw up their Ws and started chanting WU TANG WU TANG!!! So when I hit the stage in my fitted jeans and pink Nikes, I was like "Yo, let me hear you say WU TANG, WU TANG!!!".. and they did. Then I said "good, I wanted that out of your system because I saw what you did to that last dude!" There was a collective "ooohhhh!!!".. and from there on out, the show was bangin'.
OK-Tho:
What female Mc's were an inspiration to you growing up?
Dynasty:
Well, I didn't really grow up as a hip hop head. I was raised by my grandma and godparents and I developed a love for RnB and anything I could make up dances to with my girls. lol. The first female emcee to truly inspire me as an artist came a little later in the game, and that would be Lauryn Hill.
OK-Tho:
A Star In Life's Clothing is your debut album, can you describe the process of making that album?
Dynasty:
It was about writing when I felt it. Usually it was when something triggered lyrics, different situations. Sometimes though, it would just be a dope beat. I established an email address for beats reached out to producers all over. I have a joint with a dude from Romania named Phane and a few from people in the States who I've never met, like Yazu! from the DC area.
OK-Tho:
Not too many artists have the privilege of working with DJ Premier, can you tell us how you linked up and the feeling and experience you had to be working with him?
Dynasty:
Yea, I dropped a joint called Femcee in 2009 and my DJ, Sandman, emailed to Premier. He liked it and started playing it on his radio show, then he put it on a mixtape and toured with it. The next year, I met him at a party he was rockin' and he dropped this beat and I said "I want that one"...he really sent it to me! We created Epic Dynasty from it and it was a dope experience. Preem is real cool and supportive.
OK:
It's very rare to see a female MC like yourself to be making the "Real Hip Hop" music that you do, what made you want to stay in the lane of the "underground sound" of hip hop rather then the commercial sound relevant to Niki Minaj?
Dynasty:
I make music thats true to who I am. I'm not about what a lot of what commercial rappers spit about..while there is a place for all of us, I'm about dope lyrics, life, love, pushing people to be better, bodying emcees with my verses and stage presence..dope music that's real. Since I make this type of music, my growth has been slow and organic, but its worth it! Everybody is waking up now.. and people are ready for some balance.
OK:
So your from Queens, now tell us.. Knicks or Nets?
Dynasty:
ha! I'm not a basketball fan until Superbowl time. =P ... yea. read that again and that will tell you how much of a sports fan I am.
OK:
Have you toured around the US and if so, what states/cities/towns have you been to that have made you feel at home and would like to go back to?
Dynasty:
You know whats wild, I am touring overseas before touring home! But I'm working on it right now.
OK:
Eternia or Nitty Scott, MC?
Dynasty:
Ahhh. Eternia. She has a more developed flow to me..and she's raw. I like a raw, powerful emcee.
So your touring overseas then, name your favorite place you performed at?
Dynasty:
My favorite place so far has bee at the No Stress Festival in a town called Goggingen in Germany. It was basically in the middle of nowhere but they set up a stage, people camp out and there were thousands of people there. It was like a German, hip hop, Woodstock. Crazy. There are so many places I want to get to from Poland, to Spain to Kenya to Japan. I'm ready!
OK:
Tell us how you linked up with Jakarta Records?
Dynasty:
Jannis from Jakarta actually reached out to me when Epic Dynasty dropped. I forwarded his email on to someone else and I'm guessing maybe it wasn't followed up on.. or it just fell through. But I believe everything happens when its supposed to so its all good. This year, I was touring Germany and I met Blitz the Ambassador at a party in Berlin. He turned and introduced me to Jannis. J came out to a couple of shows, I told him I was working on the new album and he offered to work with me on it.
OK:
OK, dope. So seeing as you worked with DJ Premier, what other producers would you want to work with?
Dynasty:
I'd like to work with Black Milk, Pete Rock, Da Beatminerz and a bunch of "unknown" producers all over the world. I'm always checking my beats email address.. people hit me up from everywhere.
OK:
What was the last album you thought was hot?
Dynasty:
The last album that got a lot of play from me is Life is Good. A lot of albums that come out required skipping and jumping around..but I can put Nas on and let it ride.
OK:
Can you tell us some of the up coming artists that your feeling and believe are gonna make some noise?
Dynasty:
I can't lie, I'm a little out of the loop right now.. I've been in my own world, handling biz. But I'm about to meet a ton at A3C so I expect that to change shortly.
OK:
What was your favorite concert that you attended?
Dynasty:
That would have to be Mos Def and Talib Kweli. They are two of my fav emcees and I had just opened for them. Afterwards, I went down to the front row and was spittin' all the joints, line for line. It was such a dope night.
`
OK:
What's your favorite meal?
Dynasty:
hmmm. I like food. (believe it or not. lol.) I like a bangin' seafood dish.. like blackened mahi mahi or some jerk shrimp... with some mashed sweet potatoes on the side..maybe a little asparagus. Followed by some bangin' chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream on top. LOL. my mouth is watering.
OK:
If you were stranded on an island, what 5 albums would you like to have with you?
Dynasty:
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star, Ready to Die, Luther Vandross Live and A Star in Life's Clothing. LoL. Yea.. that sounds about right.
OK:
Tell us your take on Kendrick Lamar's Control verse?
Dynasty:
I think it was brilliant. He got the whole hip hop world buzzin' about him.. made a few people mad, inspired some but got his name in everyone's mouth. Can't be mad at that.
OK:
What is the future looking like for Dynasty? What can we look forward to from you and future projects?
Dynasty:
The future is truly limitless. I'm about to drop A Star in Life's Clothing on October 18th, I'm currently working on getting out and touring here in the States and we are planning another international tour for early 2014. That is what is in the immediate future. I am also continuing my work with youth, pushing them forward towards their dreams so you can expect to hear more about that down the line. Its truly a dreampusher movement over here.
