Ottawas, A Tribe Called Red won big at the 43rd annual Juno Awards. The First Nations (the term by which some native people in Canada identify themselves) DJ/Producer Trio took home the award for Breakthrough Group of the year. In their acceptance speech DJ NDN (accompanied by DJ Shub and Bear Witness) delivered an inspirational message saying I just want native youth everywhere on Turtle Island to know that this moment is proof that whatever goals you strive for in life, theyre completely attainable.
A Tribe Called Red crafts the soundtrack of the urban aboriginal experience. Their original productions and live DJ sets fuse traditional PowWow vocals and drumming with cutting-edge sounds. Most recently the group has been tearing it up on their U.S. headlining dates, which included over six performances during SXSW festival in Austin earlier this month.
