Cappo is a rapper who has been on the scene in the UK for a few years now. He has a new EP out dropping on DeFacto Entertainment, and I'm guessing it takes its name from the Transformers villain that could eat an entire planet! Check out this Cappo "Unicron" review for my thoughts on the album!
BEATS: ★★★★★
There's only a few beats on here, but they're all good! Straight boom-bap beats all the way through, which is right up my alley. I think I'm feeling the remix to SM58 Live Rounds thanks to the slappin snare. My least favorite beat is probably Quantize - I'm not feeling the kicks or snare sounds used on this particular beat, and it is a tad too abstract for my tastes.
LYRICS: ★★★★✩
Homeboy can rap. Usually UK rappers are not my favorite because admittedly as an American it's tough for me to get past the accent. But if you actually listen to what he's saying, he's basically kicking some really dope punchlines. By the way - even though Quantize has my least fave beat, I'm feelin the hook on that track the most.
CONTENT: ★★★✩✩
Although he mostly talks about how good he is as an emcee, I actually believe him, unlike a lot of other underground rappers that just throw a bunch of punches together and act way too tough when at the end of the day, they're just rappers too. That said, he could use a bit more diversity with regards to topic-based and storytelling raps, just to break up all the punchlines - he could have gotten four stars easily with just one track with a story or other cohesive topic in it.
OVERALL: ★★★★★
I think I have a new favorite UK emcee. I was immediately feeling the overall sound and once I got over the accent, it all made sense to me. I'd like to see some more material with some different topics, and just a tad more variety to the beats maybe, but overall I wish this was longer so I could hear more from Cappo! I'll definitely be checking for him and you should too!
