Choosey "Left Field" Album Review

★★★★★
by Tony Diamonds

Choosey, a Southern California-based rapper who recently joined the Dirty Science record label is definitely a rapper I'd never heard of but will be sure to check for in the future. He recently dropped his free album Left Field, featuring beats by Exile, Like, and Abjo. Dirty Science labelmates Blu, Fashawn, and Dag Savage show up to the party and lend some guest raps on this album. So how does it stand up? Peep this Choosey Left Field review for more info!
BEATS: ★★★★★
Original, knocking beats throughout the album. Definitely more sampled/underground sounding rather than trap. From boom bap style beats with soulful horns, to more sequenced yet still underground sounding beats with angelic vocals or jazzy pianos. There's a couple electronic based beats but they retain that semi-loose programming that really makes them consistent with the other beats on the album.
LYRICS: ★★★★✩
Choosey's got a paced, yet very nice flow. He has good technical skills with the multi's, although he doesn't really flex too many internals. I'm not hearing tons of punchlines but they're in there every now and then. He also has a really good rap vocal - you can listen to the album easily without feeling like you gotta press the skip button due to an irritating voice. Overall, Choosey's no Big Pun in terms of raw lyrics, but he has enough lyrical chops to keep critical fans such as myself interested in his verses.
CONTENT: ★★★★★
There are messages to his verses. He typically kicks a mixture of traditional hip hop-type lyrics with messages sprinkled in. He also can actually stick somewhat to a topic, a rarity in emcees that have this type of sound. I can tell that this album is the result of a lot of hard work and that Choosey listens to a lot of underground hip hop because the style is really perfected on this album.
OVERALL: ★★★★★
I really enjoyed it, it's one of the few I've reviewed and actually kept on my hard drive afterwards. All the beats are pretty much banging underground beats, and all his flows are super legit and underground in style, yet not so abstract that you miss the gems. I highly recommend this album to pretty much everyone. What are you waiting for, go download it now!
