ScienZe "#BringBackElla" Album Review

★★★★✩
by Tony Diamonds

Brooklyn MC and producer ScienZe has been dropping material since 2009. He may be best known for his “Hall Pass” album, getting some shine on Complex and Pigeons and Planes, among others. He even has a collab with Asher Roth (random!). In any case, read on to hear my take on his latest release #BringBackElla.
BEATS: ★★★★★
There is not one bad instrumental on this album. If you're into breakbeats, you'll probably dig "The Rewind" and "Jukebox". The rest of the beats remind me of some J. Dilla with loose drum programming and very clean EQ. Most of the beats are really mellow with jazzy pianos and atmospheric sounds. I'd say the "hardest" beat on here is probably "Decibals".
LYRICS: ★★★★✩
ScienZe pretty much reminds me of Mos Def. He pronounces his "R's" a little more, but the slang and the voice are fairly close. Not that that's a bad thing! Because we get pretty much good lyrics and flow on this whole joint, whether they are coming from ScienZe or one of the guest rappers he features on a couple of the tracks. The album follows a concept, so don't expect mind blowing punchlines, intricate inner rhyming or complicated multis, but do expect extremely listenable raps that definitely take you to a certain place and hold you there for the whole album.
CONTENT: ★★★★✩
It's pretty apparent from the cover and all the verbiage on ScienZe's website that this album is a continuation from an older project (Ella) and it definitely focuses on the ladies. The mellow atmosphere, the singing, it all contributes to a certain mood that furthers the theme. This definitely works if you are in the zone to hear this type of album.
OVERALL: ★★★★✩
I'm not sure I would blamp this album all the time, because it's really a concept album. If I "just wanna hear some raps" I'm not reaching for this one, but if I want something mellow to bump to go into a certain mood, this one's perfect. Also, if I need something to play for the ladies, anything on this project will work. This category of hip hop is not my go-to, but it delivers what it's supposed to deliver and I highly recommend it to those that are either fans of Mos Def and looking for similar charisma, fans of J. Dilla production that want to hear the next generation rocking that steeze, or someone wanting some really mellow stuff to cool out to whether male or female.
