DJ Premier & Royce Da 5'9" "PRhyme" Album Review

★★★★ by Piccochi Music

PRhyme is the eponymous studio album by American hip hop duo PRhyme, consisting of Royce da 5'9" and DJ Premier. It features guest appearances from rappers Killer Mike, Jay Electronica, Common, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Slaughterhouse, Mac Miller and soul singer Dwele. Entirely produced by Premier, all the samples come from psychedelic soul composer and producer Adrian Younge's catalog.

BEATS★★★★★
Premo does his thing just as expected on this as he samples the 70's inspired live instrumentation production of Adrian Young, like the Black Dynamite soundtrack. With the 9 track album, there isn't a beat on here that I didn't like. My favorites that stand out are "Dat Sound Good", "U Looz" (which both feature his signature chop sample style", and "You Should Know". About the song "U Looz" Premo has stated that that beat is so dope to him, in the way that he sampled it, how off time the chopped loops were as he fit them in the 4/4 measure, it really impressed him. Premier's sound is so timeless that it fits in any era of Hip Hop.

LYRICS: ★★★1/2
I wasn't too impressed with the lyrics, Royce does his thing vocally and flow wise but on joints like "Underground Kings", "Microphone Preem" and "Dat Sound Good", it lacked substance. The other 6 tracks Royce was on point speaking on life situations, not trying to be the next Guru, his growth of music as well as relations. When it came to those 3 tracks it was just bar after bar of miscellaneous words and subjects that had no plot. And then the "U Looz" track was prob one of the best joints on there and it only has one verse!!! That was a big let down.

OVERALL: ★★★★
In the end, the beats were the highlight of the album. The 9 tracks really brings it down making it too short. The features to me were not good, Mac Miller and Ab-Soul fucked up the "Dat Sound Good" for me with their lazy verses and no energy flows. Slaughterhouse is starting to get on my nerves as they mimic each others flow and styles and spit about nothing, the only good verse on that track was Joe Budden who called a few heads out. Dwele, Common and Jay Electronica were the only good feaures on there. For the most part Royce talked a good game, but it could have been a lot better, maybe they rushed this project.
