Oddisee - The Good Fight (Album Review)

Rating: 4/5 stars

Giving an instant rush of nostalgia from the first track, Oddisee's The Good Fight delivers highly relatable lyrics given over soul/NY reminiscent production.  In the album opener, That's Love, Oddisee paints us a picture of his profound idea of what love is to him, while spitting emotional rhymes over a jazzy instrumental with a smooth hook.  It's one of the most impressive tracks found on the album and is my favorite.  A track that really stands out as an individual is a song found towards the end of the track list titled Meant It When I Said It. Opening with an almost psychedelic guitar riff, the track provides a unique musical aspect with lyrics containing bits and pieces of French and the reassuring of his love to his girl. With lyrics ranging from topics such as fitting in in society to what love really is, Oddisee's lyricism parallels with real-life situations that all walks of life can relate to.  While the lyrics are a work of art alone, the album would still be successful if it was purely an instrumental album, taking influence from soul, jazz, and old school hip hop, the production is better than most, while remaining interesting and enticing. Providing a fresh take on old school hip hop, a 4/5 rating is only appropriate.  The Good Fight is an album that takes you back to your roots while sounding fresh today
