[BEAT TAPE] Rolled Gold - Archetype Beats, Vol. 1

Archetype Beats is a series of short beat tapes, birthed from the first batch of beats Rolled Gold created during quarantine, after a long hiatus from beat-making. Almost all of the tracks are in the order they were created in, showcasing Rolled’s recent experimental process and how he chooses to repeat many archetypes, including slowing down his samples, tapping out drums from his breaks, and chopping up saxophone recordings from a session last year. The artwork for the 4-part series is a surrealist painting of center city Philadelphia by Richard Metz, chopped into 4 quadrants - one for each EP. This project focuses more on jazzy, textural ambiance and grimy boombap drums than Rolled Gold’s last few projects, which were heavier on trap beats and soulful R&B grooves.

Bio: Rolled Gold is a hip hop & RnB producer from Philadelphia, PA, who has a versatile, life-long musical resume ranging from jazz to punk rock bands, trap beats to live neo-soul groups, and more. His style has heavy influence from hip-hop producers such as Madlib, J Dilla & Doom, the classic, soulful catalogues of Motown, Stax & Philly International, and jazz pioneers such as Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus & Sun Ra. While he had been sampling for most of his production career so far, his past three years have been spent composing and recording original material, with help from friends and family, to use as sample material.
