And now for our exciting conclusion. . .
Day 5: Manchester, NH - The Shaskeen
Despite a full night of sleep at home, a ten minute knockout/nap had me feeling delirious and slurring my words.
My behavior started getting really odd in pursuit of coffee with Mo Niklz. I bolted out of a coffee establishment because I thought that they were ignoring us after waiting for just a minute and a half. I marched up and down the strip that the venue is on in attempts to find a coffee shop that was actually still open (a repeated activity on this trip) just to return to our venue to find Mo Niklz with a coffee in his hand from the place that I had originally bolted out of. Its crazy behavior. Sometimes I am fine with zero sleep or a couple of hours, and others I have a full night's sleep and my body is furious that it doesn't have more.
Anyway, shaking that shit off with a shot and brew, I had the pleasure of meeting the two surprise features of the evening at Rap Night Manchester: Pure Powers and Landon Wordswell. The gentlemen are currently in the midst of a national tour as openers for Gift Of Gab from Blackalicious (easily one of my favorite MCs of all time). It was really cool to see that cat there too showing support to his tour brethren. Catch them out there on the road on the #HeadsWillRollTour and tell them I said what's up.
With no early cypher, Pure Powers hit the stage first to set off the night. The homie comes from Hawaii and Cali and carried the sunshine in with him the second the Chill Rob G original beat rocked to launch his set. He had a smile on his face for the majority of the evening. He spit and led the crowd through a series of call and responses. Peace to the gentleman. His merch game is on point too.
Landon Wordswell definitely made an impression upon the crowd with his verses of personal reflection and multi-syllabic rhyme schemes. The beats hit hard and drew the folks in attendance in. It was a pleasure rocking with both of these fellas and I definitely wish them well on their journey.
I went up next. After Pure and Landon went up with no breaks in between sets, the crowd started dissipating a bit. I knew I was going to have to put in some real work and get them drawn back in by the end of the set. Nights like that are really cool as I dig the battle. Some heads like to confront the crowd directly, and occasionally I do. This time though, I just tried to let the dynamics of the setlist speak and put my heart in it and hoped for the best. Luckily, little by little, the folks started pulling back in. By the time I was walking on my back while performing the last verse of "Sleep Deprivation And The Artist", I opened my eyes to see a nice semi circle of folks around me. I really hope you all felt the set like I did last night. I tried to close out our run on a high note. And, Mo really held me down.
The good homies Vinyl Cape closed out our mini-tour in a great way. They had the distinct position of being the most dramatically different act on the bill for the night. Brzowski seemed to be having fun with the stage banter and playing off the photographer in attendance. There was a dude next to me making guitar noises as they rocked. A group of girls up front seemed super into it. It was an absolute pleasure to rock with these cats for the last several nights.
The cypher popped off to close out the evening and, as always, featured a ton of energy and talent. Host for the evening Ill By Instinct had a great freestyle over the "Ante Up" track as did the homie Eyenine. A couple of new cats caught my ear as well. Great energy in the room.
At the close of the night, the tour parted ways. Peace to the homie Brzowski for being a true showman, taking his craft seriously, and tearing down the stage every night. To my new bruvah C Money Burns for bringing it nightly, the occasional music nerd out convos, and for being our tour accountant. To Mo Niklz for always holding me and everyone else down, for never being selfish, for driving, and always being a great dude.
Much thanks to Asylum, Charlie O's, Sacred Root Kava Lounge, Stella Blues, and Shaskeen for hosting us. To Ok-Tho Magazine for digging the diary idea and posting us. Jesse and Shupe at Rap Night, Becky at Charlie O's, Helen Stride, Bubba Crumrine at Ithaca Underground for pushing us. Eyukaliptus, Sammus, Funk Gero, Zak G, Chef The Chef, DJ Myth, Pure Powers, and Landon Wordswell for rocking with us. And to all the friends and fam, new and old, that came out to every show. It was a great run. I appreciate you all and I hope to see everybody soon.
Side thanks to Andrew Cabral and Brzowski for the source pics in this post.
